Chelsea’s feud with Antonio Conte over his £9million severance package has ended up at an employment tribunal – with a hearing taking place on Friday afternoon.
A Premier League tribunal ordered the club at the end of last season to pay their former manager the sum after they sacked him with a year left on his contract.
That appeared to signal the end of a bitter 10-month dispute but a preliminary hearing in respect of the matter took place on Friday at the Central London Employment Tribunal.
Conte, who remained out of work during the final year of his Chelsea contract before joining Inter Milan in May, did not attend the proceedings, which were scheduled to take two hours, and in private.
The Italian was instead represented by Phil Bonner of Manchester-based sports law specialists Centrefield, with Chelsea represented by Northridge Law.
In May, a three-person Premier League manager’s arbitration tribunal ruled in favour of Conte after hearing arguments from both parties – again in private.

Chelsea claimed that Conte’s conduct in what proved his final season in charge put him in breach of contract, including telling chief goal-scorer Diego Costa via text message that he could leave. Costa, it's claimed, then effectively went on strike to secure a move to Atletico Madrid.
Conte’s lawyers, meanwhile, countered that he was entitled to be paid his Chelsea salary until he took another job and that their sacking of him two months after the end of the season had undermined his chances of doing so.
His acrimonious departure came just a year after he led the club to the Premier League title in his first season in charge with a then-record 30 wins.
They lost in the FA Cup final to miss out on a second double, a defeat Conte avenged the following season, despite behind-the-scenes turmoil that saw them not only surrender their league crown but fail to qualify for the Champions League.
Chelsea have paid more than £80 million in severance to managers since Roman Abramovich bought the club 16 years ago. They and Northridge Law declined to comment on Friday. Centrefield did not respond to requests for comment.
